Finally went to the French Consulate today to apply for my student visa! I went up there by train with ma mère so we could enjoy a day in Chicago while I was up there. The process was fast, easy, a little intimidating (the bulletproof glass unnerved me just a little bit), and aside from me bringing the wrong type of passport photo for my profile (whoops), the process went by smoothly! Now I just have to sit back and wait for them to send me my passport back with my new visa, and then it's off to La Belle France!
