Parispalooza Eve!

31 October 2012

Happy Halloween, and Happy Parispalooza Eve! Tomorrow, I leave for Paris, the city of my dreams. I can hardly believe it! Paris has even stolen the spotlight of Halloween, but I don't mind! Go ahead Paris, take any holiday you want, I can not wait to see you! (Except Christmas, don't you dare touch Christmas.) After a dreadful day of school that seemed to last forever, I went out to the Bookworm Café with Paige and Julie where Mag was throwing a small Halloween party. She served Halloween-themed cakes, cupcakes (chocolate cupcakes with orange flavored and colored icing, spookily delicious!), along with her traditional scones, coffee, and tea. Julie, Paige and I snagged some children's coloring pages and started coloring them ourselves, not staying inside the lines, trying to enjoy as much faded childhood as we could! My coloring was atrocious, but Mag hung it up on the window for everyone to see anyway. Happy Halloween to me! =) After enjoying a little Halloween fest at the Bookworm, I went home for the evening to make some pasta dinner, pack for Paris, and relax for the evening. I know, I know, not exactly a thrilling Halloween festival in France, but there is no way I am going to lose sleep and miss my 6 am tram to PARIS! Besides, I'm going to pretend it's not Halloween: It's Parispalooza Eve! <3

Day 2 of Pre-Paris-Palooza

30 October 2012

Two days left until Paris! Not really too much to report about today. Although this evening, before dinner, I first went out on a coffee date with Lise where we spoke French and talked about all of the magical adventures I would be experiencing in Paris. She told me about a lot of places where I should go, what restaurants I should go to, and also to visit a street by the Catacombs named "Raspail", which is also her last name! Naturally, she feels a little honored to have her "own street" in Paris! Ill be sure to take a super awesome tourist photo for her once I find the street! After a delightful French coffee date with Lise, I met up with Maddie downtown because we planned to spend some time together before spending a weekend in Paris (she's going to Paris too, but to see her sister). We didn't exactly have plans, so we ended up walking through the streets of Grenoble under a gentle mist of rain, just…talking. It was wonderful! After enjoying our stroll in the rain, I went back home to the apartment to heat up some lasagna, and then I curled up with a good book, and before I knew it I was drifting into dreamland, eagerly awaiting the dawn of Paris-Trip-Eve.

Day 1 of Pre-Paris-Palooza

29 October 2012

A relatively calm Monday, but an exciting one nonetheless. This week is a short week of school for me - no class Thursday or Friday - and I leave for Paris on Thursday morning. How thrilling! I'm surprised I even ended up going to class today, I was so excited! (No, but I did go to class, don't worry!) After class, I went out for a bite to eat with Katie, and we also went around town and shopped for a little bit. After the snowfall yesterday, I decided to buy a nice matching scarf and hat to keep my shivering little self warm and cozy. I really enjoyed my night downtown with her! We chatted about how excited we were for Paris and daydreamed about all of the fun memories we were going to make, and we just became even more thrilled about the upcoming trip! I doubted I would get any sleep this week. I'd be too excited to sleep! After saying goodbye to Katie and going our separate ways, I head back home and prepared a small dinner for myself, and spent the rest of the night tucked in under my blanket and snuggling up with a good book. A rather calm and uneventful evening in the apartment, but I don't care - Paris in three days!! WOOHOO!!

A Winter Wonderland

28 October 2012

SNOW! My first day of snow in Grenoble! And in October! And I thought weather in Illinois was frighteningly strange, but this just takes the cake! As I saw the snowflakes twinkle on my skylight, I threw, literally, threw myself out of bed, threw on the warmest clothes I could find, snagged my camera, and ran downstairs and stepped out into the street as Super Tourist, ready to explore the winter wonderland that Grenoble became. I shuffled my way through the snow and visited some familiar places, except now they were a little different - they were SNOWY places! I stopped by the Préfecture, Jardin de Ville, Place Victor Hugo, Rue Saint-Laurent, and Little Italy. Walking through Jardin de Ville was very interesting…never in my life had I seen a palm tree with snow on it, and I never thought I would see that, either. But I did. It was like a little mixture of Illinois and Florida, all wrapped up in a cute little French box. I really enjoyed going up to Little Italy, too. I was just far enough up the mountainside to get a view of Grenoble under a blanket of snow, and I could also look up and see the snowy trees dotting the side of the mountain. I was truly lost in a winter wonderland. What a happy day. =) Aside from getting home, realizing my boots were ripping and they became little freezing-cold slush-vessels for my feet, and sitting in front of the heater for a good thirty minutes and wanting to cry, today was such a magical day! I can't wait for the next Grenoblois snowfall!

A Day "Ruined", but not Wasted

27 October 2012

I was ready to wake up, get dressed, and pack up some snacks for a great day of hiking today. Well I was ready. Until I woke up to…rain. Rain and thunderstorms all around. I quickly threw myself out of bed, checked on Facebook, and saw a plethora of "Yeah, not going to happen…" comments from the friends I planned on hiking with today. Curse you, Grenoble weather! I spent my sad little morning inside reading and doing some homework, but I was not going to let the weather keep me inside my room all day. So I called up Julie and Paige, and I met them at the Décitre Café, and together we sat around some hot chocolate and did some homework. However, there ended up being a book signing and question session  in the café that rendered homework and studying…well, impossible. So we gathered all of our things together, jumped on a tram, and went over to the girls' apartment to continue doing homework, and Julie busied herself with making a delicious pasta with red, yellow, and green peppers. It was delicious! I envy her talent in cuisine. She really inspires me to take up cooking classes, or at least learn more about cooking at home. I would love to cook delicious food like she does and invite guests over to my house and serve them a delicious dinner. Oh my goodness, that would be my dream! Well, among other thousands of dreams, of course. After enjoying such a delicious dinner, we spent yet another night around some cups of coffee, this time chatting about our lives back at our respective schools, what are friends are like, how much we miss them, and the plans we have once we get back to school in the spring. We also jumped on Google and lucked up our addresses and showed each other where we lived and our universities. It was kind of cool to get a glimpse of where Paige and Julie go to school, where they live while they go to school, and they seemed interested in my little taste of DeKalb as well. While we chit-chatted, the weather outside only got colder and deadlier with rainfall, so I grabbed my things and started walking back home, deciding that was best before the weather got any worse. However, on my way back home, I noticed that the rain was…strange. It felt different, it felt oddly cold and thick. Was this…snow…?

Picnic in the Park of Love by Day, Horror Movies at a Brazilian Apartment by Night

20 October 2012

Today was a really pleasant and relaxing day. I started the day off by making a sandwich and buying some desserts and drinks at Monoprix before meeting people for a picnic at a park here in Grenoble, Parc de l’Ile d’Amour! After stocking up on my snacks, I met everyone downtown to catch a bus to this park, which was an experience in itself. When the bus finally arrived fifteen minutes late, we got on and the bus driver charged each of us three more euro than he should have. We tried to reason with him, but he was an upset bus driver that would have none of that, so we eventually gave up, tossed our extra euro at him with a scowl, and head to the back of the bus to sit down. In a matter of seconds, literally seconds, the bus arrived at the bus stop for the park. We had to pay extra euro for a thirty second bus ride? And not only that, but we discovered that there was a tram stop next to the bus stop, and we could have taken the tram for free? What a wonderful start to the day. J After reorganizing and regrouping after throwing ourselves off of that bus, we started our trek to find the park. And with that, we started round two of our “We’re never going to find this park” adventure. We followed signs through a zigzag of sidewalks, parking lots, and playgrounds, until we gave up and ended up asking for directions at a fencing party. The people there couldn’t help but laugh; we were completely lost. They were very friendly though and pointed us in the right direction, so we retraced our steps, found the bridge the lovely French folks told us about, and there we were at the park! We were so excited to finally be here, and I am so glad that we did not give up looking for the park after going through so many endeavors. This park was absolutely gorgeous! There were lovely pebble walkways that weaved in between swooping willow trees, with red, orange, and yellow leaves dancing in the autumn winds. There were dogs running around, barking and playing fetch, children climbing on wooden jungle gyms, other families enjoying quaint little picnics at their own picnic benches, couples holding hands and walking through the park…what a peaceful place to come and enjoy an afternoon! We also stumbled upon a bridge that stretched across the Isère River, and we took a moment to enjoy the view and take some really pleasant pictures of all of us on the bridge. We would have spent more time on the bridge admiring the sights, but every time someone biked across the bridge, the entire bridge wobbled. Needless to say, we walked (maybe even ran just a little bit) off of the bridge after a few minutes. However, it was still a nice moment of experiencing nature’s beauty nonetheless! J After enjoying such a lovely afternoon full of delicious picnic food and divine sights and sounds of nature, we all head our separate ways, and I went back home to take advantage of some naptime and some study time. It wasn’t long, though, before Katie messaged me and told me about a party she was going to later at night, and she invited me along for a dinner beforehand, and then we’d head off to the party together. We enjoyed a delicious crêpe dinner (both ham and cheese crêpes, and sugar crêpes!), quickly bought a nice glass of wine, and caught a tram to go to the party. We arrived at Ricardo’s apartment (Katie’s Brazilian friend), and there were a lot of people there! There was Ricardo and his Brazilian roommate, some Koreans from Katie’s class, and another Brazilian girl that showed up later. It was yet another evening of everyone communicating mutually in French, and it was so much fun! We all enjoyed a delicious spicy Korean chicken soup, and it was too good. I practically pounded through my portion; it had been so long since I enjoyed real spicy food. It tasted so, so good! I’ll need to find the recipe somehow; I would make that dish every night for the rest of my life if I could! After dinner, we all sat in the living room talking around a nice bottle of wine, and the Koreans even taught us some phrases in Korean. Who would have thought that I’d be here in France learning Korean? I sure didn’t imagine that happening, but I am glad that it did! I’ve got to say, after spending time with Tshi-hi outside of class, and now this lovely evening, I would really like to visit Korea someday, I really would! They all seem like such pleasant people with a really interesting culture! We ended the night by watching Korean and Brazilian horror movies on YouTube, and around two in the morning I headed back home, strolling quietly through the streets of Grenoble under a pleasant drizzle of rain, thinking to myself how lucky and happy I am to be here and experience so many wonderful moments!

A Dream Soirée

19 October 2012

This week, my friend Zuzana from class invited me to a soirée she was having at her apartment this evening. I was looking forward to this night all week! When it finally came time to get going, I went to the nearest tram stop to head over to her apartment. After getting lost and having to ask some very nice Grenoblois where I was, I finally made it to Zuzana’s cozy apartment. At this little soirée, there was Zuzana (my Slovakian friend from class), her French husband, their mutual French friend, Tshi-hi (a Korean in my class) and a friend of hers, Angelina (a Colombian in my class) and her French husband, and myself, the American. J What a fantastic little gathering! I cannot even begin to explain how amazing it was to have so many different cultures all together in one room, sharing stories and sharing laughs, all of us managing to communicate mutually thanks to the beautiful French language. I still can’t believe just how awesome that was! In a room full of people who spoke either Korean, or English, or Spanish, or Slovakian, we all managed to communicate together in French. If we didn’t all speak French, we wouldn’t be able to get to know each other at all – we’d be completely lost! The beauty of language, especially foreign languages, continues to amaze me every day. After spending some time chit chatting over some glasses of wine, we made our way to the kitchen where Zuzana served a delicious Raclette feast, a dinner consisting of melted cheese on top of potatoes, ham, salami, and other meats. It was really delicious, and a lot of fun! Everyone melted their own cheese in a sort of fondue-like fashion, and then everyone got to drizzle their melted cheese over whatever dish that pleased them. I tried the cheese on ham, potatoes, and salami, and it was all mind-numbingly delicious. Even better, we all continued our French conversation around dinner. We talked a lot about politics and how things differ in each of our countries, and we also discussed how we viewed the politics happening in other countries as well. I was amazed to see that everyone knew so much about American politics, even more so than I did! If anything, it was a moment that made me realize I should be a little more involved in both my own and other foreign governments as well. Time to take advantage of some newspapers!  After this delicious dinner, we returned to the living room and shared a really amazing experience: One after another, we all listened to a song on YouTube from our respective countries. For example, Tshi-hi played some popular songs from Korea, Angelina played some traditional dance songs from Colombia and also taught us the dance moves, and I serenaded everyone with the sounds of Britney Spears, RuPaul, and Gladys Knight. Everyone had a turn and everyone got to hear some great and interesting music from a whole variety of different cultures, and I had just the greatest time. It’s moments like this that I would never be able to experience back home in the States! A story like this is the kind of story I like to tell once I get back home and my family and friends ask me how my trip was. It isn’t the Alps or the Eiffel Tower and I am going to remember fondly. It’s this night that I am going to remember vividly, and I am going to look back at this night and admire it greatly for the rest of my life. Not even just this night, but this whole day. What an amazing day in Grenoble, France!
